Refugee Integration, Stability, and Education

RISE Tutoring is an Arizona State University student organization, sponsored by the American Muslim Women’s Association, which helps refugee youth achieve academic and personal success through tutoring and mentorship.

Student Working

Our Mission

Refugee children who move to the U.S. often fall behind in school due to linguistic and socioeconomic barriers. RISE Tutoring seeks to change that—one student at a time.

We provide individualized tutoring to our students designed for their unique educational needs, paired with guidance and mentorship, to help them achieve academic and personal success.

papago elementary school

In spring 2017, we began working at Papago Elementary School. Over the past year and a half, we've watched a group of bright, energetic kids grow, and we couldn't be more proud of them. However, they've only been in the United States for a few years, and many still struggle with basic spelling, reading, and math. We've made it our mission to change that.

Amwa's office

The students we tutor at AMWA's office were our very first. We met these kids before we were an organization, and over the past 5 years, our students and tutors have become family. For a while, we moved from place to place to continue tutoring, but two years ago, we found our home at AMWA's office. Today, we continue to provide tutoring and homework help.

Valencia newcomer school

In October 2018, we began working with Valencia Newcomer school, a one-year immersion program for refugee and migrant youth. We aim to ease the transition of newly arrived refugees into the Arizona school system through the classroom support we provide Valencia. We’re so grateful for this opportunity to broaden our impact on the refugee community.

We are a program of the American Muslim Women's Association. In addition, we have built partnerships with the Alhambra School District and Papago Elementary School.
